DIY Great Gatsby Headband!

Contributed by: Trish Gau, The Hive Overland Park

Going to a Roaring 20’s party? Dressing as a flapper for Halloween? Visiting a few speakeasies with some girlfriends? Or need a creative craft to do with the grandkids that can be used over and over for dress-up fun? Here’s an easy Great Gatsby style diy headband to bring your look up a notch!

For one headband you will need:

  • 15” piece of elastic sequin trim (a little more or less depending on the size of head)

  • Variety of feathers

  • A small piece of ribbon approximately 1” wide by 2.5” long

  • Embellishments (can be purchased new or use beads, old costume jewelry, rhinestones, or fancy trim that you have lying around)

  • Hot glue gun

1. The first step is to overlap the ends of the sequin band and glue them together.

2. Lay the small piece of ribbon down and glue the “right side” seam of the headband on it at the middle. You are using the ribbon to cover the feather ends and create a surface on which to glue your embellishments. Glue one edge of the ribbon around to the backside.

3. Arrange an assortment of feathers and glue them down on the ribbon edge (layering a few colors or sizes looks great here). Glue the remaining ribbon end up to cover the pointy ends of the feathers.

4. Add your decoration (if desired) to the outside of the ribbon– here we had a Hive black/gold/bee theme going for our Prohibition tour, but these headbands can be any color and as fancy or simple as you desire!

The same principles can be used to make a hair clip instead of a headband. I used pieces of polymer clay that I had from another project as the surface to glue the embellishments on, glued the feathers to the back and glued a piece of foam to cover the ends and attached a clip! You could also use a stiff piece of felt, a piece of plastic or even some cardstock if you don’t have clay lying around!

Now put it on and dance the Charleston!

Always fun with the Hive Women!
