LED Light Mask-Healthy or Scary?

LED light mask

Have you ever wondered about the benefits of an LED light mask? Supposedly they can do everything from reducing discoloration in your skin to helping rev up collagen production.

My daughter helpfully suggested that we test one out for research purposes (I’m sure she saw it on Tik Tok and she definitely wanted it after I was done). I didn’t buy the deluxe model she recommended for $500+ (light is light, am I right?), but I am always game to try something new, so I went with a much less expensive version that was still FDA-cleared (which I read was kind of important). Easy, inexpensive and with amazing benefits. . .sign me up!

LED light masks, also known as LED therapy masks, are wearable devices equipped with a grid of LED lights in various colors. These lights emit specific wavelengths that penetrate the skin, targeting a range of skin concerns. The most commonly used LED light colors in these masks are red, blue, and green. This is what each color is thought to help with:

  1. Red Light: stimulates collagen production, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It promotes a more youthful complexion and smoother skin texture.

  2. Blue Light: targets the bacteria responsible for acne breakouts. It can help to reduce inflammation and minimize acne scars.

  3. Green Light: known for its soothing properties. It can help calm irritated skin, reduce redness and improve pigmentation.

  4. Combination Lights: Some LED masks offer combinations of different colors to target multiple skin concerns simultaneously, purportedly resulting in improved skin texture, tone, and overall radiance- even improving lymph function.

An at home mask gives you convenience and accessibility – you can use it anytime and anywhere and for short periods of time. It is generally safe and non-invasive and doesn’t cause pain, discomfort or downtime like some spa treatments. It doesn't involve harsh chemicals and it is also much cheaper in the long run than expensive in-spa treatments. The process of using an LED light mask can be relaxing and stress-reducing, offering a few minutes of self-care and rest in your daily routine.

Using an LED light mask is a straightforward process. Here are the basic steps:

  1. Wash your face: Start with a gentle face cleanser to remove any makeup, dirt, or impurities and maximize the mask's benefits.

  2. Secure the mask: Adjust the LED mask to fit comfortably on your face.

  3. Select the desired light setting: Depending on your skin concern, choose the appropriate LED color or combination.

  4. Wear the mask: Wear the mask for the recommended duration, usually around 15-30 minutes.

  5. Relax: Enjoy some downtime while the LED lights work their magic.

  6. Finish your routine: After using the mask, you can apply your regular skincare products.

Here is my personal take on the light mask that I bought: First of all, I probably only washed my face the first time I used the mask. I am still on step one of our previous post, Tips for a Healthy Skin Care Regimen (In my defense, I rarely put makeup on at all, so I usually consider my face clean after my shower).

Next, fitting the mask comfortably on my face was a challenge. I definitely could get a tolerable fit, but a piece of plastic with spacers pressing around my face was not what I would call comfortable (I had envisioned multi-tasking chores while I used it which I quickly realized was not going to happen).

I would also recommend much shorter sessions - like around 10 minutes, especially to start. The first time I used it I went with the default setting of 30 minutes and my skin felt pretty irritated after- lesson learned. It did provide me with a brief rest period which is definitely something that benefits me when I start to feel my afternoon crash coming on (also a good time to listen to a short podcast or meditation). After I finished, I applied my favorite Vitamin C serum which felt very soothing.

Time will tell if I start to look more youthful when this experiment is over. . .one thing is sure- my daughter isn't going to get her hands on mine (maybe I'll let her borrow it)!
