Fireball Cake

You can double this recipe if you want more layers or need a larger cake. This cake was traveling to it's destination so we only made it with a single box of cake mix!

For the Cake
  • 1 box vanilla cake mix

  • 1t ground cinnamon

  • 1/3 c vegetable oil

  • 3 large eggs

  • 1/2 c water

  • 1/2 c Fireball Cinnamon Whisky

For the Filling and Frosting
  • 3 sticks of butter, softened (1 1/2 cups)

  • pinch of salt

  • 6 c powdered sugar

  • 1/4 c Fireball Cinnamon Whisky

For Decorating (these are just suggestions - feel free to get creative!)

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour two 8" round pans and line with parchment paper. In a large bowl, mix together cake mix and cinnamon, then stir in vegetable oil, eggs, water, and whisky. Divide batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake according to package directions and let cool completely before frosting.

  • In a large bowl, combine butter, salt, half the powdered sugar, and 1/4 cup whisky. Using a hand or stand mixer, beat until smooth. Add the remaining powdered sugar gradually and beat until light and fluffy.

Melted butterscotch and cinnamon candies
  • Use your food processor to separately chop the butterscotch candies and the cinnamon candies into smaller (chocolate chip size) pieces. You could also place them in a plastic bag and beat with a hammer/mallot. Preheat your oven to 350°. Place some yellow candies on a silicone sheet (or parchment) with red candies around edges (to resemble flames). The candy will spread so don't place too much on at a time or it will be thick. Place in oven for 6-10 minutes - keep an eye on it - the melting happens fast and you don't want it to burn. Remove from oven and crack into flame sized pieces after it has cooled. Here's a video I watched.

frosted layer cake
  • Frost between the two cooled cake layers and then cover the whole cake using your preferred frosting method (frosting spatula, piping it on, etc)

  • Use your creativity to decorate your fireball cake! Melt your red melting wafers according to package instructions and use the squeeze bottle to drip the "chocolate" along the edges of the cake. (I added a little shortening to make the consistency a little easier to squeeze) Then spread gold sprinkles around the edge of the drips using a small pastry bag (you could also cut the corner from a small baggie or simply use a little spoon.)

  •  Insert the flame candy pieces and the bottles of fireball around the cake. Place hot tamales around the base of the cake. Use the squeeze bottle to add personalization (name, age, etc)!

Voilá! You have a fun and tasty fireball cake! If you are transporting your cake, make sure you think about the height of your carrying case - our flame size was limited by that factor. You can use the same idea for other themed cakes. . .think Rum Chata, Bailey's, Malibu. . .the sky's the limit!
