Make Your Own Almond Milk?

Contributed by Trish Gau, The Hive Overland Park

On Christmas I received a gift that was initially met with some skepticism; I wasn’t convinced it was something I needed or would even use. The gift was a Tribest Nut Milk Maker from my daughter who, let’s be honest, probably saw it first on Tik Tok.

When the box hadn’t been opened a few days later (I was still debating returning it at this point), my daughter took it upon herself to show us how easy it is to make your own almond milk, and turns out, it really is!

My family drinks a lot of non-dairy milk; I feel like I became lactose intolerant in this middle stage and nobody really complained when I stopped buying the cow milk so now it's all we usually have.

One of my first thoughts after receiving this gift was, aren’t nuts really expensive?  Surely this healthy alternative costs more than grabbing some from the refrigerator section at the store?! But, ever the finance major, I did the math and it turns out that it is not only healthier, but also cheaper to make your own. The $11 bag of raw almonds at Sam’s Club would yield 32 cups of almond milk ($.34/cup) and the $9.30 3-pack of unsweetened almond milk costs about $.39/cup!  Plus – I don’t have to fit 3 half gallons in the fridge at one time, and I can use the remaining nutmeat in other recipes!

So, how difficult is it to make your own almond milk? It is actually very easy.  You can use this machine to make other types of milk – we have tried it with oats or you can make soy milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, etc.  Probably the most difficult part is remembering to soak the nuts – but that step can be skipped if you are in an almond milk emergency situation.

Here are the instructions for almond milk:

  • Soak about 3/4 cup raw almonds in clean (filtered if possible) water for 6 hours or overnight

  • Rinse and drain the nuts

  • Add 4 cups of water to the base of the machine

  • Add nuts to the nut holder

  • Attach to grinder

  • Press the raw button 3-4 times

  • Open the machine and enjoy your fresh almond milk!

You can use a spoon to press the nut meat against the container to squeeze out the remainder of the milk. Then, you can save the ground nutmeat to add to smoothies, use as an ingredient in protein balls, make it into crackers or make it into nut flour (dry it out on low in the oven) and from there the possibilities are endless!

Have you ever tried making a non-dairy milk on your own before?!
