New Year's Resolution ?!

I’m not sure if I’m in the majority here, but I personally cannot stand a New Year’s resolution. Why would I commit to something I know I’ll fail at?!? No thank you.

But at the same time, I want to better myself. What’s an easy way I can better myself but also give myself grace?

The Floor Transfer

This exercise has been a hit with my patients. Not only because it is functional, but also because it predicts mortality! Your ability to get on and off the floor is inversely correlated to how long you live. You are 5 times more likely to die sooner if you cannot get off the floor.

Why? This movement requires a significant amount of strength and balance. Both these factors prevent falls and demonstrate your overall healthiness. So let’s get healthy and give ourselves the strength and balance we need to live our later years with confidence!

Practice getting on and off the floor everyday, 3-5x/week, or once a week - just start somewhere. Do as many on each leg as you can until you start to get tired. If that is only one repetition, that is okay!

If you have pain or difficulty with this, use modifications. Hold onto a chair or wall to help you up.  If you cannot go all the way down, then start with shallow lunges.

So let’s not make this a “New Year’s Resolution”, but a goal to improve our ability to move better and live longer!
