Don't miss a thing with The Hive Women and Buzz from The Hive!

Pelvic health physical therapy started in the 1940s but became popular during the 1970s during the women’s health movement which broke down barriers and fostered discussions on female issues that were considered taboo.

Today, pelvic health is well-established and has become even more well-known the past five years with the help of social media. There is finally attention on diagnoses that women have silently suffered with for centuries. And did you know that both women and men have a pelvic floor? Men benefit from pelvic health interventions as well; for example, after a prostate removal.

Leading the way in this field are physical therapists. They have become the medical professionals who provide solutions to these problems through hands-on techniques, education, and exercise programs.

One of the common pelvic health dysfunctions we see is “mom butt”. That’s obviously not the technical term! But this is an overall posture that occurs from the physicality of pregnancy as the core weakens and glute muscles clench in order to compensate. This posture creates habits that can last a lifetime so no matter what age you are, this is important to address. And even if you did not birth children, this is a common posture for women due to our bone structure of wider hips and low back curvature compared to men.

“Mom Butt” can lead to tailbone bone pain (coccydynia), low back pain, pelvic floor weakness and tightness. To help with this, we recommend working on core strength, posture, and pelvic floor and glute flexibility. The video shows some exercises we recommend for this. Check yourself as you squat to pick something up off the floor or when you’re standing for a long time - do you clench your butt with no tension in your core?! Let’s fix our “mom butts”!
